Campus Internship - Driving circularity - Identification and quantification

DOW Benelux - Terneuzen

Einddatum: vrijdag 06 oktober 2023

Campus Internship - Driving circularity - Identification and quantification of impurities in plastic pyrolysis oils

DESCRIPTION/RESPONSIBILITIES:
At Dow, we believe in putting people first and we’re passionate about delivering integrity, respect and safety to our customers, our employees and the planet.

Our people are at the heart of our solutions. They reflect the communities we live in and the world where we do business. Their diversity is our strength. We’re a community of relentless problem solvers that offers the daily opportunity to contribute with your perspective, transform industries and shape the future. Our purpose is simple - to deliver a sustainable future for the world through science and collaboration. If you’re looking for a challenge and meaningful role, you’re in the right place.

About you and this role
We are looking for you, an ambitious bachelor’s, or master’s student (m/f), to support our Packaging, Specialty Plastics & Hydrocarbons Business by doing an internship project focused on the identification and quantification of impurities in plastic pyrolysis oils for our location in Terneuzen, the Netherlands.

Dow is offering great career opportunities in a global and international environment. The department that will welcome you is referred to as the Process Development & Circularity team, part of a global organization focused on Process & Catalysis R&D and supports various sustainability programs in areas such as Advanced Recycling, e-Cracking, and Syngas Technology, as well as critical plant operations

Responsibilities
Plastics Circularity is a globally important topic. At Dow, we are working to better understand pyrolysis oils originating from plastic waste, also known as plastic pyrolysis oils (PPOs). Gas chromatographic (GC) techniques are utilized, specifically with mass spectrometry (MS) and vacuum ultraviolet detectors (VUV), to provide identification and quantification of the composition of the PPOs.

This project will focus on the identification and quantification of impurities in the PPOs. This information is essential for the assessment of upgrading options for the PPOs. In previous work, it was determined that the complex matrix of the PPOs hindered the identification of such species, and as such a new approach will be required. The aim of this project will be to develop a better understanding of the impurity profile of PPOs. This will be accomplished through developing new methodology for the separation, identification, and quantification of PPO impurities using gas chromatography with various detector technologies (e.g., mass spectrometry, nitrogen specific detection, vacuum ultraviolet detection).

This project will be a collaboration between the Packaging, Specialty Plastics & Hydrocarbons Business and Core R&D Analytical Science.

Qualifications
• You are currently studying towards a bachelor’s or master’s degree in analytical chemistry, applied chemistry, chemical engineering, … or equivalent, preferably with experience in chromatography.
• You are well organized, and you can drive decisions, also when information is lacking, or data is limiting.
• You work autonomously but are a real team player interacting well with people from different functions, geographies, and backgrounds, and putting team success ahead of your own.
• You are a good listener, communicate and interact well and you can translate complex technical issues into simple value propositions with stakeholders.
• You bring a proactive and can-do attitude to the workplace but with a strong safety-first mindset.
• You are curious and passionate about innovation with a strong drive for results and feel a strong sense of achievement by providing real solutions.
• You have a good working knowledge of English.
