THE ROLE

As an Autonomy Engineer at Damen Naval is responsible for designing and integrating of autonomous systems within Naval environments, focusing on navigation, communication, and safety. This role involves defining the architecture and specifications of hard and software components for autonomous systems, ensuring compliance with maritime regulations. The Autonomy Engineer collaborates with cross-functional teams, conducts extensive testing, and stays up to date on the latest advancements in autonomy and related fields to contribute to innovative naval projects.

 

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

As an Autonomy Engineer your key responsibilities will include:

  • Design autonomous systems for above and underwater that can operate effectively in Naval environments, considering factors like navigation, communication, and safety.
  • Integrate functions such as autonomous navigation, obstacle detection, and decision-making using machine learning and computer vision techniques.
  • Incorporate various sensors (radar, lidar, sonar, cameras) into autonomous systems for data collection and situational awareness.
  • Integrate reliable communication systems to ensure seamless interaction between autonomous vessels and other naval assets.
  • Specify and conduct extensive testing, simulations, and validation procedures to ensure the reliability and safety of autonomous systems in different scenarios and conditions.
  • Stay up to date with maritime regulations and standards for autonomous systems, ensuring compliance with autonomous systems.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including software engineers, hardware engineers, and naval architects, to integrate autonomy into the overall ship design.
  • Address challenges and unexpected issues during development and deployment.
  • Oversee innovation projects from initiation to completion, including budget management, resources, and adherence to timelines.
  • Maintain detailed documentation of the design, development, and testing processes for knowledge transfer and continuous improvements.

 

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

To excel as Autonomy Engineer, you should possess the following qualifications and qualities:

  • Master of Bachelor degree in Robotics or another relevant study with at least three years of relevant experience.
  • Experience in the design and integration of autonomous systems, preferably in a naval environment.
  • Expertise in a variety of autonomy concepts and practices.
  • Good command of the Dutch and English language both written and verbal.
  • Excellent references antecedents as a pre-employment security screening is standard part of the recruitment procedure.
  • Permanent EU citizenship and passport are both required and candidates with NL/EU (work) visa or with both an EU and non-EU nationality and/or passport are not eligible in accordance with the requirements imposed by the military nature of our projects.
